Dear LJ,

I know people have been dinning your collective ears about this for a while now, but when web comics start bitching about the whole Facebook/Twitter thing? Probably a sign that you should consider doing something about it.

Just sayin',

Internets, it's been a pretty strange week, so this is gonna be a pretty strange post. Of course, by strange I mean A.D.D.

1) First, some fic recs:
- Easy to say but harder to feel this way by [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g - Brad/Nate - A FBI/undercover!AU featuring Brad and Nate playing house in, as Brad puts it, "ABC fucking Family hell on earth". Only, it turns out they're not playing as much as they thought after all. Enjoyable chemistry and tension going on, and interactions I could actually see playing out in my head. Plus Ray makes an appearance as his usual awesome, tech-wizard self, but that's just a bonus. Generally speaking, the writing is such that you can't help but root for the boys to wind up together.

- The End Of The Line by [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl - Brad/Nate (implied) - A very thought-provoking conversation piece between Brad and Nate when Brad comes back from the war. Great for the politically minded, but generally intriguing insights into their characters as well.

- Five Times People Realized Brad And Nate Were Together by [livejournal.com profile] irisgirl12000 - Brad/Nate (implied-ish) - What it says on the tin, basically. Very subtle and, in one or two places, just plain sweet. Generally, it seems like a pretty plausible view of how the boys navigate around DADT. (Also, Reporter's bit is hilarious, y'all will see what I mean)

- Falling Apart To Half Time by [livejournal.com profile] miss_begonia - Brad/Nate - Pretty much the best dance!AU I've ever come across (I'm something of a closet dance wonk, so these things are relevant to my interests). Very enjoyable sexual tension/chemistry, creative use of side characters (Poke has "Latin hips", y'all), intriguing song list (.zip file of songs used in the fic is offered at the very end), this has pretty much everything.

2) What The Sugar-Frosted Fuck Is Wrong With People? (Part 1) and Part 2. Also known as Why Hanging Out On [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political Is Bad For Your Mental Health.

3) The new GK kink meme (bonus points to whoever finds my prompt :D) I've said it before and I'll say it again: there are some sick, talented weirdos in our fandom and I LOVE IT. I hope they never leave <3

4) [livejournal.com profile] sgrio posted this little gem, which I've affectionately christened The Many, Many Reasons Stephenie Meyer's Editor Needs To Be Shot Into The Sun. Especially humorous for the literarily inclined and the grammar wonks of the internet.

5) A humorous conversation with Le Boyfriend:

Le Boyfriend: So I notice the nursing majors are traveling in larger packs than usual lately.
Me: They're clearly massing (for some nursing revolution, obviously)
Le Boyfriend: So...if enough nurses mass in one place, would they all congeal into a doctor?
Me: ...

Photobucket

Maybe I'm just especially sleep-deprived (you know, to that point where everything is hilarious) or it was a "you had to be there" sort of deal, but I thought that was fantastic. Stuff like this is absolutely why I keep him around.

Anyway, I'm sorry I disappeared for so long. I had a long, immensely headache-inducing issue with my computer (the wall charger died, so I couldn't use my laptop for a while), a mind-boggling shuffle of school work (including weather-related acts of God!), and just...life happened. To be more precise, college life happened, in the sense that it hit me like a fucking truck. Things are better now for the moment, so I should be a bit more active now.

Salutations, internets. A few things:

1) I beg anyone and everyone who reads this NOT to re-post anything I say on Facebook or Twitter. Some of the things I say on here could cause me great embarrassment at a minimum and possible legal trouble in some cases, and it'd just be...a bad thing. I wouldn't be able to be as weird as I want to on here anymore, y'know? I don't intend to repost anything y'all say, all I'm asking is for the same courtesy toward me.

ETA: I just came across a way to get rid of it on comments and stuff (not in the entry making section, unfortunately, but you can't have everything) courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] gothic_elvis:

1. Install Greasemonkey Add-on for Firefox So, yup. You gotta have Mozilla.

2. Go Here and install that program after installing Greasemonkey. It should work immediately without an internet restart needed. Mine did, so I'm just going by that.

PLEASE REPOST THIS EVERYWHERE.

2) A meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] spirited_lizard:

Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Name 10 songs you love starting with that letter.

I was given S (evidently in honor of the Stark song she had in hers) )

3) Some comments on the last Hunger Games book, Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins

Cut for spoilers and such )

Aaaand that's all for now. TB write-ups to follow later tonight, just making a few finishing touches. Ta!

Internets, I officially hate my neighbors. Two noise complaints later, I woke up at about 8:00 this morning and was shuffling around Le Flat (waiting for the caffeine to kick in), and what am I confronted with? The ever familiar, ever rage-inducing BOOMF BOOMF BOOMF BOOMF BOOMF of my neighbors' speakers (from above this time).

Who honestly needs to blast their shitty, generic R&B at EIGHT FIFTEEN IN THE GODDAMN MORNING?! I ask you. Is this trendy? Did I miss something?

Ugh. Anyway, since either a) my R.A. hasn't done anything, b) the neighbors are exceptionally asshole-ish stubborn, or c) some combination of both, I am now plotting revenge. Mostly in the form of putting my tiny stereo on the highest shelf I can find in Le Flat with the speakers pointed at the ceiling and blasting the most terrifying death metal I can find (said tiny stereo is shockingly loud). But internets, I'm torn over choices in death metal based on what I have, which is where y'all come in:

[Poll #1613168]

I know this comes across as really fucking immature, but god damn it I can't take a whole semester of this, I need to nip it in the bud.

In the mean time, stay tuned for True Blood write-ups later today/tonight (omg the season is almost over, when did that happen O_o)... Ack! Gotta run, class is starting soon

Ugh, internets, have I mentioned recently that being a responsible adult kind of sucks? Starting a new bank account with Wells Fargo turned out to be surprisingly difficult (on account of what turned out to be a broken ATM), then the fiasco with my books, struggling to find a job on campus, and then dealing with our inconsiderate asshole neighbors in the apartment above us. I had to file a noise complaint today!

Let me be clear; I love loud music as much as the next gal, but when your neighbors can clearly distinguish the lyrics and occasionally feel the bass vibrating in their teeth? That's going too far. I hate filing complaints, I really do (ditto re: Le Boyfriend), so the fact that Le Boyfriend and I both felt the need to say something to the R.A. should speak for itself.

I won't even get started on the sickening irony of how difficult it was to get everything sorted for my online Stress Management class. Maybe it's a test or something.

Basically, this is how I feel about humanity at the moment:

Photobucket

Lawd, give me patience, because I might kill someone if you give me strength.

Anyway, here follows a summary of my first two days of class:

Real life ramblings ahoy! (probably a bit snarkier than usual on account of neighbors-induced bad mood) )

I know that doesn't sound like a lot of classes, but there's also the Spanish Level I and Stress Management classes that I have online (which have their own headaches, let me tell you).

Life has been such a pain lately that it's even thrown me off my schedule of things I planned to post here. I hate how hectic things get at the start of a new semester *headscreen* I hope it all smoothes out sooner rather than later so that I can get back to being funny and light-hearted and stuff :-\

How goes school (either college or otherwise) for everyone else out there? I read y'all's posts but if anyone's looking for a partner in headache-dom, feel free to vent here.

Internets, there is a cicada (or some other variety of chirpy/shrill thing) on the wall just outside my window and IT WILL NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP. And I am without sleeping pills, so it startles me awake every time it decides to start back up again.

Plus the people below me just started playing loud, crappy bass-heavy even as I write this entry. Bear in mind that it's approximately one o'clock in the morning here -- normally, this wouldn't be a problem for me, but I am actually trying to rest up so I won't zombie my way through my SEVEN A.M. THURSDAY MORNING CLASS.

So, basically, this is me right about now:

Welp, I'm back in collegeland. It hasn't been a great day though:

1) New internet/cable service is sucking bigtime

2) Neighbor below us keeps playing loud, bass-heavy music (Le Boyfriend, patient as he is, is even contemplating a noise complaint)

3) Just got an email from my professor about my new text books (sent a few hours after I ordered said textbooks). My almost-$300 Spanish course bundle from the college bookstore is not correct for the web class (which I am taking).

They listed the wrong books. The wrong, very expensive books.

First of all, I'd like to wave a big hello to anyone who wandered over here from the multi-fandom friending meme (friended two so far, but there may be lurkers)! I don't really have an introductory post to speak of, but I'm pretty easy to figure out so just make yourselves at home.

Secondly, have a meme I gacked from [livejournal.com profile] britticism

If you’ve been tagged, you must write your answers in your own lj and replace any question that you dislike with a new question.
Tag eleven people. Don’t refuse to do that. Don’t tag who tagged you.
(does the "don't refuse to do that" thing ever make anyone else feel the instant compulsion to do exactly that?)

Blah fuckin' blah )

Argh, I still need to pack for moving back to collegeland tomorrow. I don't want to go back, but at the same token I'm also bored out of my skull here at the Ol' Homestead so the prospect of going back to my own life seems appealing too. Funny how life works out that way, I guess.

A few letters/things I want to get off my chest:

Dear RL friend,

While I'm touched that you value my opinion enough to send me your writing for critique, it's getting to where I really wish you would stop. Quite honestly, your writing isn't that good, but you get defensive as fuck if I point out a problem and pout if I don't point out any problems, so I'm not really sure what you want me to do. Thanks a million for putting me in the most awkward position ever, I pity the poor fuck you will eventually take on as your professional editor/agent (RL friend wants to be a writer).

Long-sufferingly,
[livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies

Potentially unpopular opinion ahoy!

Dear professional social activists of the internet,

This could just be me being irrational, but what the fuck is the point of using racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia/etc. bingo cards in a discussion? How are those helpful or constructive in any way other than as a good way to make everyone else as non-responsively pissed off as possible? I'm legitimately confused as to how this is supposed to make an effective point. To me, it actually seems rather self-defeating in a trivializing-a-serious-issue-as-a-joke sort of way. I must be missing the point.

Sincerely wishing the fad would goddamn die,
[livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies

Dear La Famille,

I don't know how often anyone has done this to you, but hearing about how "it could always be worse" when trying to blow off some steam about how unhappy you are really doesn't help. In fact, it usually makes it worse ("If my life isn't so bad, then I guess I just suck for being this unhappy"). So I'm sorry that telling me to be glad I don't live in a box or have cancer or something really doesn't magically fix my general malaise.

I still love you anyway,

Dear God, how has it been three days already? Shit, time flies indeed.

Once again, not much has been happening 'round these parts so I just didn't feel there was anything to report. Aside from Le Boyfriend's continuing efforts to break me of my hermit-like tendencies (or at least lessen them). But anyway...

1) Went to Le Boyfriend's mother's birthday dinner at a hibachi place last night (think Benihana but off-brand). Opted out of letting the chef fling a bit of fried rice at my face in hopes of landing it in my mouth, as those usually hit me in the eye almost every time, but it was otherwise a pretty good night. I didn't even mind being squished up next to perfect strangers! (Occupational hazard of hibachi joints, yo)

2) This made me so angry I had to put the computer down and do something else for a while. Then again, mental disorders (especially stigmas toward and naysayers against them) are something of a touchy subject for me, so I suppose I brought the rage on myself. NONETHELESS.

3) Have also been watching a really absurd amount of Six Feet Under and Invader Zim with Le Boyfriend recently. Amusement ensued when we realized that the mother (Ruth) in SFU is the same woman who played Bootsie (the meek, over-religious maid) in Die Mommie Die. More for the contrast in character, really, but we'll also probably laugh our heads off over it when we get to the two episodes with Stark in them. Die Mommie Die reunion! Except SFU came out first by two years...SFU reunion then! \o/

...holy crap, the A.D.D. is strong in this post. Um. Anyway.

Stay tuned for a True Blood write-up, among other things. Things will probably get a bit more regular 'round these parts when school starts back up again -- I haven't decided yet if this will be out of boredom or out of school forcing my mind to unfuck itself back into something remotely resembling organized.

In any case, that's all I've got for now. Have a Courage Wolf!

P.S. - Le Boyfriend just told me about a joke macro involving the Legend of Vuvuzelda (yes, a direct spoof of Ocarina of Time). I LOVE IT.

P.P.S. - In talking about World Cup stuff, Le Boyfriend also posed an interesting question that I now pose to the soccer wonks of my flist:

Was there some incident a while back that led to a country's team being pulled out of the Cup (by their country's leader) for two years/series/sessions? If so, what happened and what country was it?

Hey there, internets. I was settling down to do the write-ups of the last twelve episodes of Supernatural Season 5, but then I realized that that would be a lot of text without a lot of substance, and I'm feeling...deep...today. Like discussion is the order of the day, y'know? So I just did an over-arcing write-up with some discussion points and questions and random comments that should have something for everyone.

In which I think too goddamn much and ask questions about details that probably don't mean anything... )

Also, I was watching Speed of Life (on Discovery Channel) with Le Sibling, and we decided a few things:

- Tl;dr of the show: Grungy film majors film animals eating other animals in really slow motion
- Bonus points if said animals are a) incredibly creepy and/or b) do nothing unless poked with the camera (this usually applies to snakes, spiders, and snapping turtles)
- Slow-motion footage of a sloth (which, for the record, move at 15 feet PER HOUR) seems like the very definition of unnecessary...
- Watching a hedgehog fight a scorpion was both hilarious and awesome
- Any location in which spiders the size of your hand (or bigger) are a common feature is a place I firmly do not want to visit unless I have a shotgun or a flamethrower

And that's all I've got for now. Brad reminds y'all to keep wings level

Alrighty, so Les Olds are back from vacation, which means that my house-sitting duties are concluded and thus my journal activity should pick back up a bit now. Still not back to every single day yet because I'm trying to break myself out of compulsive hermit-dom, but it's an improvement nonetheless. For now, a few things:

1) True Blood Episode 3x06, 'I Got A Right To Sing The Blues' )

2) True Blood Episode 3x07, 'Hitting the Ground' )

Finally, I come bearing a meme I gacked from [livejournal.com profile] luvinjcnjt

Argh. Let me tell you, internets, I hope all the crap that's been happening lately means that I'm going to have a spectacular run of good luck sometime soon, or else I might just lose all will to live.

Bawww moar, self... )

At least I'm not depressed anymore -- well, for the moment -- just...annoyed. Here's hoping things start looking up before I go back to collegeland (in almost exactly a month).

Okay, just so this isn't entirely a pity party post, have a lyrics challenge. Y'all know the drill; I post the first two lines of 20 songs, you guess them, and I cross out the correct ones and label them accordingly. Googling kinda spoils the fun (for real), and I'm adding a twist; if you think you know the song but need a hint, ask and I'll post the next two lines of the song to see if that helps jog your memory. Sound good? Alrighty then!

Without music, life would be a mistake... )

Finally, can anyone who knows more about this tell me when The Miraculous Year is supposed to come out/finish filming? This is sort of relevant to my birthday New York Trip interests so I'd appreciate any and all info on the subject...

Ahoy there, internets! I come bearing the news that I'm almost done with my Supernatural write-ups and the exciting (well, if you're me) announcement that my muse might finally be starting to unstick a bit. I've been having flickers of ideas lately, which seems like a good sign.

But first, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] idrilfinial and [livejournal.com profile] ladyseraph_756 for sending me Dessert Waffles <3 Like everyone else, they made me hungry as hell (but I loved them anyway).

Also, in an amusing anecdote of the "LOL my life" variety, I got a mass email this morning from the president of my university to tell me that some miscreant hacked one of the servers that Health Services uses. Addresses, prescription numbers, social security numbers and a host of other sensitive information (except credit card info, thank God) for 27,000 students/staff/faculty got out to some unknown party.

Damn you, internet, for being so goddamn addicting. I was actually going to make an effort to leave the house and try to fight my hermit-dom today but then I stumbled across this little gem (a roundup post of a troll that's been plaguing [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants, [livejournal.com profile] ffrantsrants, and even briefly [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck). Between the comments in the roundup and the posts themselves, this is pretty much me now:

Normally, I wouldn't care very much (as trolls go, this one's not great), but mental illness came up so now I'm just watching the commenters rip her a new one to make myself feel better, troll-feeding be damned, Supernatural write-ups can wait.

Before I get on with the True Blood action, I'd just like to issue a big honkin' "Thank you" for the outpouring of support in my last post. I was touched beyond words and y'all made me legit smile in real life more than once and just...*sigh* as internet friends go (or friends period), you guys are the best. Bar none. Full stop. Thanks for bearing with the mopey/emo/teenager post

Anyway, let's get on with it:

1) True Blood Episode 3x03, 'It Hurts Me Too' )

2) True Blood Episode 3x04, '9 Crimes' )

3) True Blood Episode 3x05, 'Trouble' )

I have such a love-hate relationship with this show, y'all. It's so cracky and ridiculous and yet completely addictive (mostly because it teases me with a good episode for every LOLQUOI? episode or two). There's also the ASkars factor, but that sort of goes hand in hand with the crack aspect, at least where addictive potential is concerned. Stay tuned for a Supernatural post, and thanks for y'all's time; you guys know you rock, right?
