Hey there, internets. I was settling down to do the write-ups of the last twelve episodes of Supernatural Season 5, but then I realized that that would be a lot of text without a lot of substance, and I'm feeling...deep...today. Like discussion is the order of the day, y'know? So I just did an over-arcing write-up with some discussion points and questions and random comments that should have something for everyone.
1) I've decided that major character death apparently means precisely jack shit on this show now. Evidence:
- Sam has "died" twice and bounced back
- Castiel has died twice (and almost died once) and bounced back
- Bobby has died once and bounced back
- Adam has died twice and bounced back once (not sure about his future status)
- Azazel has died once and is evidently (according to Wikipedia) coming back, although this could just be in flashback form
- Grandpa Winchester died FOREVER ago and is apparently coming back (although see above speculation re: Azazel)
Argh. It's okay to keep character dead, show, really.Kripke's lampshade Chuck himself said that fans will bitch no matter what you do, so why keep kowtowing to them?
2) I'm guessing retconning Adam back into the show was a last-minute decision once the PTB decided that the show was getting a sixth season? Because making Dean be the vessel as originally planned and having both brothers go into the hole would've been a tidy ending for the original five season plan. Can anyone give me a timeline on this?
3) Death was my favorite horseman, and one of my favorite characters on the whole show (same with Le Boyfriend):
Supernatural S05E21 Oh, Death

Y'all wouldn't fucking believe how hard it was to find a video of this that had embedding enabled...
4) I officially want to be Mary Winchester when I grow up (except less with the demon frenching and eventual crispy critterdom) . She took on an angel and made her fucking bleed *sparklyheart eyes*
5) Sarah Drew is really good at playing crazy girls (first Nora on SPN and then Suzy Pepper on Glee? I'm sensing a trend here...)
6) 'My Bloody Valentine' was hilarious both for the reference to the awful, awful movie and for the Cupid (especially Dean's reaction to the Cupid)
7) It's just a little to deus ex machina for me that Castiel magically got all his angel mojo back. He cursed God and yet...no punishment whatsoever. I know God has left the building an' all, but really? Is this more bulletproofing by the crazier/more vocal Cas fangirls?
8) A few questions/comments in regards to 'Hammer of the Gods':
- Why was Zao Shen the only one who didn't speak English?
- Was it me or did anyone else hear Mercury speak and think that he sounded startlingly like ASkars in points? (it bugged me to the point that I had to IMDb it just to triple check)
- I can't help but notice that Gabriel easily fooled Kali into killing his double while Lucifer saw right through it and killed the correct Gabriel no sweat. It makes me uncomfortable and I'm not entirely sure why...possible racist/misogynist/religiously disciminatory vibes, I suppose.
- Why were the non-Christian deities cannibalistic? I could see them (and the angels) caring little enough about human life just to kill them for fun, but was eating them really necessary? Especially when the angels didn't eat anything?
9) Crowley became on of my favorite characters surprisingly quickly, especially with his spot-on observation about Lucifer's sentiments toward demons and how they stem from how he feels about humans.
10) Some comments specifically about 'Swan Song':
- Dean coming to the final fight just so Sam wouldn't be alone?

- "Hey, assbutt!"

(ditto re: Sam's HERP DERP face right before he tried to jump down the hole)
- Chuck reached a truly obnoxious point of lampshading in this episode (especially during the "fans are always gonna bitch" part -- that was just unnecessary)
- Am also wondering why Chuck vanished (is this symbolism for Kripke stepping down?)
- YAY DEAN GETTING A FAMILY (at least for a little while) \o/
- Why the fuck did Sam magically come back? I know this show doesn't give a shit about character death, but COME THE FUCK ON
Also, I was watching Speed of Life (on Discovery Channel) with Le Sibling, and we decided a few things:
- Tl;dr of the show: Grungy film majors film animals eating other animals in really slow motion
- Bonus points if said animals are a) incredibly creepy and/or b) do nothing unless poked with the camera (this usually applies to snakes, spiders, and snapping turtles)
- Slow-motion footage of a sloth (which, for the record, move at 15 feet PER HOUR) seems like the very definition of unnecessary...
- Watching a hedgehog fight a scorpion was both hilarious and awesome
- Any location in which spiders the size of your hand (or bigger) are a common feature is a place I firmly do not want to visit unless I have a shotgun or a flamethrower
And that's all I've got for now. Brad reminds y'all to keep wings level

and stay frosty. Thank you for your time!
