I've got several different origins in my head for them. But let me tell you about my personal favorite and the one I draw from most often.
Tunny moved to Jingletown when he was 14 and a total dork. He falls in with Johnny and Will and gets more cool. He and Will kind of flirt around and such and have a very physical relationship, because Will is a physical guy.
Then Tunny's dad and his sister, Gemma, die in a car accident when they're hit by a drunk driver. Tunny is in the car with them and is with them when they die. That night, he sneaks out of the hospital and walks like 8 miles in the pouring rain with his arm in a cast and shows up on Will's doorstep, and Will takes him in and Tunny tells him what happened, and they fall asleep in their underwear together, because they are completely in love.
After this though, Tunny goes from good kid to angry rage monster we know and love. He gives up his dream to go to Berkeley, he starts getting tattoos, he starts trying to hurt himself skating and in pits and getting into fights. And Will is the only one who can keep him level.
