So, for those who haven't heard, Stark is going to the Tonys again because Kinky Boots is up for a gazillion awards (deservedly so, from the sound of it) and he himself is one of them (Best Actor in a Leading Role). Oh God, I hope he wins or, at the very least, that Kinky Boots gets Best Musical so that Bring It On: The Musical (oh god why is this even a thing) doesn't get it.

But I mostly want Stark to win because OH MY GOD IMAGINE THE STUPIDLY ADORABLE SPEECH. IMAGINE IT. IT MIGHT EVEN INVOLVE THIS LOOK:

So, internets, an incident leading up to my job serves to reinforce that I'm basically the smartest person alive. The short and the short of it is that, when she called to offer me the job, my recruiter and I scheduled two appointments with the hospital's Occupational Health department to do blood tests/TB tests/physical/etc. on "Friday and Monday at 1:30 pm". She even sent me an email about it which I read a million times just to avoid showing up on the wrong day.

I completely spaced showed up a week early anyway.

The bright side is that I got about 30 minutes/a metric buttload of paperwork done in the HR office (so it'll all go a lot faster when I'm SUPPOSED to show up), but it was still really embarrassing when I realized this after about fifteen minutes of arguing with the Occupational Health people about why I wasn't on their appointment books for this past Friday.

Photobucket

Like I said, smartest person alive.

Anyway, I've seen a bunch of movies recently and haven't really talked about any of them, so have a list of bullet-time reviews in no particular order!

The Possession: I have to give this one points for a slightly different take on the typical possession mythos and some neat effects, but the ~family drama~ felt kind of tacked on and forced. 6.5/10, worth renting if you're seriously bored
House at the End of the Street: If everyone tells you to stay away from the creepy, mackerel-eyed boy next door, chances are at least one of them is doing it for a good reason. Jennifer Lawrence sure does look good in a tank top though. Less of a horror movie and more of a thriller, also worth at least renting but probably not worth the high movie ticket prices. 6/10
Resident Evil: Revelation: I'm not even going to score this one because it was so pointless and ridiculous. True to form, Milla Jovovich demonstrates creative and exciting ways to murder things, and has a soft spot for a kid (again).
Pitch Perfect: A bit cheesy in places, but it doesn't take itself seriously so it balances out, plus it's fucking hilarious and the music is surprisingly good (if nothing else, see it for Rebel Wilson). Definitely worth seeing in theaters, 7.5-8/10
• Lawless: Tom Hardy is such a badass that it almost makes you forget your overwhelming desire to punch Shia LaDouche in the face. 8/10, with bonus points for a random appearance by Crazy Gary Oldman and for having that one angel girl from Supernatural as one of the leading ladies.

Movies I want to see:

Sinister (LIKE BURNING)
Seven Psychopaths
• Frankenweenie (God help me, I still love Tim Burton, even though he doesn't deserve it)
Hotel Transylvania
Looper
Dredd
Perks of Being a Wallflower
Silent Hill: Revelation
Wreck-It Ralph

This is all going to be quite a feat considering I won't actually be bringing in a salary for another week and a half or so.

In other news, I've started marathoning Scrubs on Netflix because I've always been meaning to give it another chance, and because I read somewhere that real life medical types think it captures working in a hospital relatively accurately (compared to ER or House). Beta work is coming along nicely too now that I've hammered out the kinks, but that's otherwise all for what's going on in my life. How are y'all?

Job hunt update: I've now applied to 8 listings, including two that are 45 minutes away on a good day. That is how fucking desperate I am. But enough about that, on to the actual point of this post!

So basically, in my current state of unemployed slug-dom, I started marathoning Nip/Tuck on Netflix and have become horribly, horribly addicted to it. If y'all haven't tried it, I highly recommend it; it's by Troll Murphy Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and it's actually a lot wittier and smarter than Glee but still retains a lot of the same crack-tastic-what-is-this-I-can't-even moments. I also love it because it is the closest thing I've ever seen to televised fanfiction, including implications that the two leads are gay (or at least that one is gay for the other), long held het-crushes, threesomes, hurt/comfort, etc.

In the context of this particular episode, Stark turns up as one lead's youngest son as an adult in the far future who was born with ectrodactyly in both hands (one is surgically fixed at birth, and this ep checks in just before he's about to get the other fixed and is dealing with the emotional implications of it). He was equal parts adorable and snarky and basically one of my favorite side characters ever, but this episode also was fun because of all the great extreme closeups and picturesque brooding -- some of which I took the liberty of screen-capping for y'all.

Conor McNamara, 2026 )

Feel free to judge me for taking 17 screen caps from about 20 total minutes of screen time, I'm fully aware it's a little bit sad.

On the off chance anyone wants to nick a few of these for fan art/icon/etc purposes, go right ahead and don't worry about credit or anything because I'm sure a thousand virtually identical other screen caps from the same episode are out there too. Enjoy!

Welp, I've officially moved back into the Ol' Homestead for the time being until I can find a job and scrape together enough money to move out again. The job hunting part should be relatively easy (medicine is great that way), but I'm taking a little siesta first so I can get over the whole post-university-shell-shock thing. As a result, I don't really have much to report these days -- hence why I've been a girl of few words lately.

In terms of this here journal, I have a couple of plans that I wanted to run by y'all.

Idea 1: A general multi-fandom fic rec swapping post (inspired by rewatching Friday Night Lights -- I want ALL the Tim/Jason/Lyla fic now) (also this might knock something loose in my head that'll help me get back to my fics)
Idea 2: Another gif dumping post; I'm pretty sure my collection has at least doubled since the last time I did one
Idea 3: A mancandy swapping post, since I'm still on my JHutch kick and have recently re-discovered how badly I want to do awful, unforgivably raunchy things to Chris Evans

Thoughts and suggestions are, of course, welcome and encouraged. In the mean time, have a silly gif

I'mma keep this one relatively brief since my life is still pretty fucking boring at the moment.

1) T.V. shows I've caught up on:

- Sons of Anarchy - Much as I miss the long hair (which made him look like Le Boyfriend), I would still hit Jax/Charlie Hunnam like the fist of an angry god. Also? Clay needs to get hit by a bus or two...or twelve (I can't be the only one who's noticed that Ron Perlman is amazing at playing complete utter assholes). Plus I still so want to be Gemma when I grow up.

T.V. shows I've tried out (and promptly gotten hooked on):

- American Horror Story - I kind of love Connie Britton in this but, then again, I've known she was a badass ever since I watched her as Mrs. Coach in Friday Night Lights. Also, Idgaf if he's batshit and clingy and whiny, I kind of want to do horrible raunchy things to Tate (me and the rest of the fandom, from what little of it I've glimpsed so far). I love the show so much that I'm almost willing to forgive Ryan Murphy for all the horrible inconsistencies and shit he's perpetrated on Glee to date. Almost.

- Hart of Dixie - First of all, I kind of fucking love this show as someone who lives in the South because it gets an amazing number of things right. And then there's Wade. OH LAWD, don't even get me started on how much I love Wade and his glorious, lickable abs.

Photobucket

Photobucket

...I need more Wade gifs in my life.

As you might have noticed, the execs seem to lust after him almost as much as I do considering how much time he spends in various states of undress. For any GK fangirls out there who haven't tried this show yet, I highly recommend it.

2) Le Boyfriend and I are due to go see The Devil Inside at some point this evening (because I'm a horrible sucker for exorcism movies). Pray for us (choice of words fully intended), exorcism movies are usually either good or hilariously godawful. Personally, I think it looks like the bastard lovechild of Quarantine and The Exorcist with a touch of The Exorcism of Emily Rose -- which, again, could be great or just fucking awful. Possible review post material y/y?

3) My muse showed signs of life recently! I managed to knock out another scene in my Starsgard hurt/comfort piece (the one I haven't worked on in almost a year, for all three people who remember it) and revised/storyboarded a couple of other scenes. Raptor Jesus willing, I might even have another part up relatively soon *fingers crossed*

And aside from a head cold combined with a horrible case of cramps, that's all I've got for now. How are y'all?

All right, internets, because I am the biggest masochist ever the best friend ever and because it's been a while since I did a real movie post, I agreed (at [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle's request) to review a little flick called Light and the Sufferer. The main reason she asked (and I agreed), besides out of a mix of curiosity and masochism?

Answer cut to protect flist formatting )

Yeah, we're a couple of hopeless fangirls. I also agreed to do this because [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle is a giant chicken about secondhand embarrassment and she was afraid this would be cringeworthy. Read the synopsis from the back of the case and see what y'all think:

Based on a short story... )

So yeah, I'm mostly intrigued but also somewhat concerned that I'm not nearly high enough to appreciate this movie properly. We'll see, I guess. Anyway *pops knuckles* Let's get this show on the road!

Notes taken as I watched the movie (with an attempt at a bit of a recap) )

I don't know about this recap style, guys, this movie was only 70 minutes long and took me just about seven hours to write up.

Aaaand the actual review: Welp. )

Oof, I think that's just about enough HTML for a little while. I hope somebody out there got a kick out of this, because I sure as hell did.

So I had my job interview this morning and, according to the woman who conducted it, I did "brilliantly" -- but, considering how wrong I was about my two interviews with the university athletic training program, I'm not going to call this one won just yet. I'll find out either way on Wednesday (they'll call me if I got it and/or email me if I didn't), so I'd love it if y'all could keep your fingers crossed for me...*gulp*

In other news, I spent the afternoon catching up on True Blood. Now that I'm almost up to speed, I mostly have one thing to say:

What in the actual FUCK is Alan Ball smoking? In the immortal words of Andy Bellefleur, "Jesus, tits, and GOD AMERICA." (which, btw, is possibly one of my new favorite exclamations of all time).

(On the other hand, amnesiac!Eric is so fucking adorable that I might just be willing to put up with this show some more...)

I'm also having fun with the fact that watching one episode of TB ratchets up my Southern-ness about a million points -- I've been spending a whole afternoon with it, so I sound pretty fucking hilarious right now.

Finally, on a totally unrelated note, I found out I get to have another group term project. Those of you who know me relatively well can probably guess how I took that bit of news.

Oof, sometimes I really suck at updating this thing. Maybe I need to find myself another thirty-day writing meme.

Just dropping in mostly to relay a hilarious GK fangirl moment I had yesterday: Le Boyfriend's mother's birthday was yesterday, so we went out with his family to this Brazillian steakhouse (complete with Portuguese name and words on the menu). I may or may not have spent embarrassing portions of the night quoting Baptista lines to myself....*ahem*

Blah, Le Boyfriend and I are going to spend this weekend apartment hunting up in universityland. I'm not excited about it, mostly because I'll be bored out of my skull but also on account of how it'll involve me pretending to be an adult. I hate pretending to be an adult *pouts*

In other (less whiny) news, I found out some interesting aspects to the NFL player lockout that's been going on recently. Initially, I thought the whole problem boiled down to two things... )

Of course, this probably only matters to football nerds and sports medicine wonks like myself, so why don't I just keep going with the thirty day writing meme instead?

Day Twenty-Eight: Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

Ahahaha, oh, most definitely. I got started writing fic again through teaming up with [livejournal.com profile] abrokencompass to write Starsgard fic, and then I more recently got into writing alongside [livejournal.com profile] mcl4r3n -- which has been fantastic, considering how we hammered out the Batfic AND are close to finishing the Starsgard vampire AU. I love collaborations :D I have yet to write something that included getting art done though (see my earlier response about never having done a big bang), I've always wanted art for something I was writing but am too timid to ask anyone -_-

Photobucket

That being said, feel free to follow me (just tell me who you are so I don't have a paranoid freak out) and/or rec me various pages to follow (since the "People to follow" thing keeps giving me an error page). May as well fully embrace the addict lifestyle, yeah?

First, to any and all of my flisters out in Canadialand who were at Bluesfest during the storm, I sincerely hope none of y'all were squished by falling stages or otherwise injured *hugs*

In other news, I was sitting here contemplating the delightfully passive-aggressive formatting of the ETA in this FFR post and got to thinking about The Great Ship Wars of Yore.

WAIT! COME BACK! I'm not a crazy H/Hr or R/Hr shipper, that's not what this is about!

What I was going to say was that I admit I was only watching the batshittery go down from the very outermost periphery of it all (I was a gangly, insignificant fangirl of thirteen or so back then), so I never heard about any death threats or anything. Was this an actual thing? Can someone confirm this? I was hiding in a quiet little niche of Harry/Draco shippers, so I may as well have been in Amish country at the time.

Also, eine kleine light reading for anyone who wants to see just how crazy some of this shit really got

I'll just be over here contemplating the irony of the fact that the most peaceful/wank-free fandom I've ever been a part of is about WAR. Seriously.

Finally, the thirty day writing meme continues (and is almost done!)

Day Twenty-Five: Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I do indeed listen to music when writing! I even make playlists for certain fics if I'm having an extra hard time setting the scene (I believe the GK/AI crossover and one of my Starsgard fics have their own playlists, but there could be more that I'm forgetting).

Also, gif!

emerald_skies: (Default)
THING THE FIRST - Random cat picture of the day: If you box it, they will come... )

Not quite as stupefyingly adorable as my little tortoiseshell fuzzball, but still (hopefully) pretty amusing and cute anyway.

THING THE SECOND - Day Twenty-Four: How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

Y'know, it's the damnedest thing, I used to be super compulsive about getting a beta for EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF EVERY SINGLE THING I wrote (grammar/punctuation, flow, the works), but after a while I stopped doing it beyond occasionally finding someone to pester into making sure the story reads okay without sounding too odd in random places. I'm wildly insecure and neurotic about how my writing reads to other people, but I somehow still managed to gain enough confidence in myself to stop relying on betas. (With that in mind, one can only imagine how neurotic I used to be about writing...). I don't really have any notable horror OR dream stories about them though; I think I lucked out in that every person who's ever betaed for me turned out to be at least reasonable if not actively nice (without going above and beyond the call).

On the other hand, if one counts checking to make sure the story reads okay as beta work, then I have to say that [livejournal.com profile] jean_iris rocks for everything she's done to help with my Starsgard fics, and [livejournal.com profile] pau494 pretty much deserves a medal for everything she's done to help my Idiot fics along (including the GK/AI crossover).

THING THE THIRD - So I have a question for the Twits Twitter users among you, internets: I noticed (in the course of contemplating signing up) that Twitter wants your full name. Is there a way to keep this from displaying on your profile/information page where other people can see it? Do you get to choose a username later? I've been getting increasingly interested in acquiring a Twitter, but if it showed my full name then I would have to control so much of what I say (for weirdness, mostly) that there wouldn't really be any point. Halp?

Fuck, I wish I wasn't so paranoid *facepalm*

Internets, how many of you have ever encountered a major setback in your writing -- especially in writing a particularly long fic? Well, I just had one of those.

Basically, a friend directed me to the most comprehensive breakdown of Marine Corps boot camp scheduling I've ever seen in my life in an effort to help me with my GK/AI crossover.

At first? I was unbelievably excited

Photobucket

Maybe this won't be as ludicrously difficult as I initially thought!

And then I realized that this schedule indicates I'm going to have to either rearrange or entirely ditch about half the notes I took and storyboarded out of Making the Corps.

Photobucket

SO MUCH ANGUISH. I don't think y'all even understand how much research I've been doing for this fic. Damn my obsessive compulsion to get as many little details right as I can!

And this comes right after I was informed that I've been looking up the wrong type of prosthesis (below the knee, Tunny has an above the knee *memory fail*) Thank God I hadn't written tons about that part yet, or else I'm pretty sure everyone would be able to hear me screaming.

And now, more meme-age!

Day Eleven: Do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

Well, I certainly seem to have quite a fondness for AUs and crossovers, and really a lot of my fics (including AUs and crossovers) seem to have this thing where they keep turning into hurt/comfort. I like to torture my characters and I don't even know why O_o

In conclusion, the moral of this post is: WRITING IS HARD.

P.S. - See my previous post for less whining and more fic and kitten pictures (well, just one actually, but it's pretty damn cute).

Salutations, internets, I come bearing proof that gravity can be very hard if you're a five(ish) month old kitten:

Cut to protect flist page formatting )

All together now: D'awwwwww

Day Ten: Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

Well, I suppose writing Remus/Sirius/James was rather uncomfortable purely on the basis that I had never written threesome fic before that, but otherwise...not really. I'm not sure if this makes me ultra-flexible or a serious wimp, but there it is.

Finally, have a snippet of Idiot fic I thought up at around four in the morning, just 'cause. I plan to use it at some point in the GK/AI crossover, but I suppose it could also stand on its own since they don't really specify how Tunny lost his leg beyond getting blown up somehow.

There's a dull, tinny ringing... )

It might possibly be a little stream-of-consciousness-y on account of how early it was in the morning when I wrote it, but Le Boyfriend said it seems pretty good so I figured it should do as a snippet of fic for y'all's time. Enjoy :)

Um, this might go poorly for me in a ghost-town-ish sort of way, but I'll give it a shot anyway. Basically, I got this love meme thing from [livejournal.com profile] lemniciate:

THIS IS WHY YOU'RE GREAT!

My thread is here, any and all comments would be appreciated, even if it's something small like "I think your gif collection is awesome". It's been one of those days, y'know, so maybe this will help, Idk. If you guys wind up doing this too, link me to your threads so I can love on y'all in return?

Anyway, meme-age!

Day Six: When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

If it's existing canon characters, I'm perfectly fine with both. I suppose I'm better at writing male characters (seven-ish years of writing slash will do that to a person), but I'm perfectly cool with tackling both. When it comes to OCs, I try to stick to guys because the unconscious temptation to turn them into self-inserts isn't quite as bad there.

That being said, have a Fassbender gif:

LAWD HAMMERCY, MY BODY IS READY, ETC.

Anyway, my thirty day writing meme continues!

Day Two: Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

Hmmm...let's see if I can remember everything.

Harry Potter - Probably what I've written the most in in terms of number of fics (rather than word count). Alas, I don't really write for this fandom anymore, but I do still read it from time to time!

House, M.D. - I didn't write very much here, mostly House/Wilson and House/Wilson/Chase, and then the muse died when I gave up on the show some time around Season 5.

Brokeback Mountain - Jake/Heath RPS, good times, good times. Alas, I don't write for this fandom anymore.

Glee - I wrote some St. Berry and some Will/Emma, but I am entirely too self conscious to post any of it because I'm so far behind on the show. Don't write for this one anymore either.

True Blood - Mostly in the sense that I've written a couple of little GK crossover snippets, not sure if this counts or not. I do still write little odds and ends for this fandom when the mood strikes.

Generation Kill - Oh lord, far and away my most prolific fandom to date (in terms of raw word count). I've written so much fic for this fandom, it's ridiculous, and I don't think I'm ever going to stop because I love it JUST THAT MUCH.

American Idiot - Probably my second most word-count-prolific fandom, and I don't think I'll be quitting this one anytime soon either.

X-Men: First Class - Not sure if this one counts because I've only written/posted that one unfinished snippet, but I decided to list it anyway because I have a feeling that won't be the last thing I write for this fandom.

P.S. - You know you might possibly be a little too obsessed with a fandom when it starts influencing your appearance. Today, I painted my nails black for the first time in like five years because the various Idiot fics I've been writing (and all the punk music I've been listening to to help with that) put me in the mood for it *facepalm*

P.P.S. - In RL news, my neighbor has enlisted Le Boyfriend and I to help her catch a stray mama cat and four kittens living in her garage tomorrow. So, I started watching Sons of Anarchy either yesterday or the day before, and I think it's safe to say I'm pretty much hooked. I have a few things to say so far (as of somewhere in the middle of Season 2):

1) STOP 'SPLODING MY OVARIES, JAX, GODDAMN.

(Also, I ship the hell out of him and Tara, they're just asking for a fanvid about them set to Love The Way You Lie -- that is, in the unlikely event that such a thing doesn't already exist)

2) Does Hale remind anyone else of Nate for some reason? Or is it just me?

3) Dude, it cracks my shit up like no other that Gerry from Remember the Titans grew up to be Opie in SoA. The transformation is...startling (mind you, not as much as the difference between Nate and Lance Sussman, but pretty close).

4) HALF-SACK, WHY ARE YOU SO FUCKING ADORABLE?

(I want fic of him and Juice, as they are essentially the butt monkeys of Samcro -- I can't possibly be the only one who's thought of this)

5) Henry Rollins is good at being creepy. Like, really good. Also, he reminds me so much of PJ Ransone that it's actually kind of disturbing.

Watching this has also given me a killer hankering for a GK motorcycle club!AU. I saw such a thing posted somewhere a while back but I've lost track of the link, can someone help me out with that? Or, failing that, please to be writing or directing me to other MC!AU fics?

That's all I've got for now, have some JGroff being adorable to (hopefully) improve the day.

Greetings and salutations, internets. I just got back from seeing Priest in 3D with Le Boyfriend, and I thought I'd post a few comments for anyone who's interested.

Cut to spare those who honestly don't give a shit )

Also, God help me, I loled at what happened to Beel (yes, Stephen Moyer is in this movie, he's Paul Bettany's character's brother). His last scene was so cheesy and just...I can't. You have to see it to believe it.
