Author: [livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies
Pairing: Pre-/Implied Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews (depending on how you look at it)
Rating: PG
Summary: In which a bad night against the Blues shows Kaner and Jonny rather unexpected sides of each other.
A/N: For [livejournal.com profile] jean_iris, my favorite enabler, who talked me into writing this in the first place and graciously helped me tease a germ of an idea into...this. I'm still a newbie to hockey fandom and to hockey in general, so this is probably hand-wavey as fuck and all dents and dings are definitely mine.

Jonny's not normally one to believe in conspiracies most of the time... )

(For non-hockey fans who are curious, this is Patrick Kane and this is Jonathan Toews and behavior like this is why I wrote something I didn't totally hate for the first time in several months).

All right, internets, because I am the biggest masochist ever the best friend ever and because it's been a while since I did a real movie post, I agreed (at [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle's request) to review a little flick called Light and the Sufferer. The main reason she asked (and I agreed), besides out of a mix of curiosity and masochism?

Answer cut to protect flist formatting )

Yeah, we're a couple of hopeless fangirls. I also agreed to do this because [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle is a giant chicken about secondhand embarrassment and she was afraid this would be cringeworthy. Read the synopsis from the back of the case and see what y'all think:

Based on a short story... )

So yeah, I'm mostly intrigued but also somewhat concerned that I'm not nearly high enough to appreciate this movie properly. We'll see, I guess. Anyway *pops knuckles* Let's get this show on the road!

Notes taken as I watched the movie (with an attempt at a bit of a recap) )

I don't know about this recap style, guys, this movie was only 70 minutes long and took me just about seven hours to write up.

Aaaand the actual review: Welp. )

Oof, I think that's just about enough HTML for a little while. I hope somebody out there got a kick out of this, because I sure as hell did.

Internets, do any of you ever have times in life where RL is kicking your ass so hard that you start to feel like you're losing your ability to fangirl(/boy)? Well, I've sorta been feeling that way lately, which culminated in last night; as I was studying for my test today, I found myself trying to remember if Stark's birthday (and thus my usual birthday post) had passed without me noticing ("I know it's in September, but when...")

Welp, funnily enough, it's today! Guess I haven't lost my fangirl mojo after all :D As such, have a brief celebratory pic/gif-spam (like I need an excuse, lol)

Author: [livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies
Pairing(s): Tunny/Will/Extraordinary Girl (+ Tunny/Will, Will/EG, Tunny/EG)
Word Count: 30,247
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Every year on Halloween, Jingletown's hottest (and only) night spot, Club Suburbia, holds a costume party. This year, it takes a night of being something they're not in order to make Tunny, Will, and Grace start to see who they really are.
Author's Note: I'm not entirely sure how I came to Halloween costumes when I was kicking around ideas for this, but once I thought of it, it just seemed to fit. I sure as fuck wasn't expecting it to get as huge as it did though, hopefully it's not too crack-tastic and ridiculous /o\ This is dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle and [livejournal.com profile] pau494 for their amazingly patient and helpful beta work -- seriously, y'all are the best <3

1) Question to the GK fans on my flist: Can someone direct me to the page(s) explaining what was up with Trombley's training? I dimly remember something about him not finishing BRC, but I'm not sure and I haven't found it yet in the course of poking through my copy of the book. It's a stupid question, but I'd really appreciate the help! Solved, thanks to the amazing and awesome [livejournal.com profile] minzky

2) Update on earlier whining about how writing is hard: I managed to sort everything out faster than I expected and now have things loosely storyboarded (and correctly this time!) enough to get Tunny through Infantry School at the very least -- I should be able to easily tackle the Recon training bit once I sort out the Trombley thing I asked farther up. Thanks in large part to the best Marine documentary ever (complete with bonus real!Nate action), I might actually get Part II of the GK/AI crossover done and posted relatively soon \o/

Photobucket

...*ahem* Moving on.

3) MOAR THIRTY DAY WRITING MEME:

Day Twelve: Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

I'm not entirely sure I understand what this question is getting at. I'm going to assume it's talking about crossovers/AUs, so yes, I have indeed attempted adaptations (on more than one occasion); first with the Batfic and now with the GK/AI crossover. I think of it as interesting brain exercise, plus an excuse to geek out about multiple things at once :P

I wish I had more to put in this post, but things have been relatively boring lately. How goes life out there for y'all in the wilds of the interwebs?

P.S. - I just noticed I have almost 800 items in my gif/macro folder. Dear sweet Raptor Jesus, my packrat tendencies, let me show you them.

So, internets, guess what I spent most of yesterday and a good chunk of today researching? Transtibial prosthetic legs (yes, it's for Idiot fic). That may quite possibly be the most random thing I've ever researched for a fic but God damn it, I'm going to get this damn GK/AI crossover right if it kills me.[/cool story brah]

In other news, I come bearing linkspam:

1) When I first read this, I thought I was being punked but no, flesh-eating cocaine really does exist. Apologies for the somewhat large, kinda gross pictures at the source, anyone who's particularly squeamish should be careful clicking this one.

2) Ladies and germs, I present to you the highest local authority where I live. Wanna know what's even scarier? He wants to run for President.

Photobucket

And here we thought Dubya was bad, Jesus fucking Christ on rubber crutches.

3) So most of us have heard of the Westboro Baptist Cult Church, yes (Helpful background link here if not)? Well, I was already aware of some of their fuckery and, after recently watching a very intriguing documentary about them, I wound up hearing more about some of the godawful things they say at dead soldiers' funerals. Things that made my blood boil (which is saying a great deal, considering it takes a lot to get me well and truly angry).

Well, all that was why I was especially pleased to hear about this. There are already laws in place to keep these fuckers away from soldiers' funerals, but they're obviously doing jack shit, so maybe this will help a bit more -- provided it passes, of course. I think it offers a tiny, promising glimmer of hope that the government is getting slightly better about separating church and state.

And lastly, as usual, more of the thirty day writing meme!

Day Seven: Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

Absolutely! I can think of two instances off the top of my head; Harry Potter (Underwater Light specifically) changed my opinion about Draco Malfoy, and several different GK fics helped me go from feeling "meh"/mildly positive about Ray to absolutely adoring the little fucker. I don't know if this sounds egotistical or not -- I apologize if it does -- but writing Ray in Celer, Silens, Mortalis also helped to change my opinion. He's a lot more fun (and a lot less exhausting) if you get to talk like him for a little while :P

All that being said, have a gif of John Barrowman (at least, I think that's who it is) double-fisting Shakeweights for y'all's time.

Evidently I have a lot of thoughts today. Go figure.

Dude, my Sociology class was actually thought-provoking for once!

Photobucket

I know, I think I almost dropped dead on the spot from the pure shock. Allow me to explain:

My professor introduced a concept to the class that I've long considered to be true; the notion that professional degrees (undergrad and beyond) are becoming increasingly overinflated, which leads to a lot of people getting out of higher education with degrees that they think are important but ultimately don't mean shit in the real world. Some of these degrees are even so rigorous that it leaves people with less time to work and build up real-world resumé experience (which seems to be becoming more and more what a lot of employers care about nowadays).

A couple of side points/discussion questions my professor made (in this same vein) also jumped out at me:

• (For those living in the U.S.) Do you think it's possible that this degree inflation is (partially) responsible for the way that the rich seem to be getting richer while the poor seem to be getting poorer?
• Does it strike anyone else as odd that the qualifications keep increasing for jobs that, for the most part, aren't getting much harder?

Idk, this might just be me being a giant nerd, but I think it's interesting to think about (probably because I'm finishing my undergrad soon *gulp*)

In other (more fannish) news, I've been kicking around some ideas for a Tunny/Will/Extraordinary Girl fic, but I'm somewhat undecided over a couple of things about it.

Thus, I decided to pose the questions to the...maybe 5 Idiot fans on my flist! )

So, thoughts? Is anyone intrigued or should I just shut up and get off the internet?

Finally, I should probably send out some sort of internet search beacon for [livejournal.com profile] mcl4r3n so we can finally finish the Starsgard vampire AU (sorry about that, btw, I sort of got sidetracked). In the mean time, see my previous posts for all sorts of foreign policy/political goodness -- also, for the True Blood fans among you, stay tuned for my comments on Dead Reckoning, which should (hopefully) be up by the end of the week.

Cheers.

So, um, I just came across a couple of pictures over at [livejournal.com profile] stark_daily from American Idiot's closing night that I wanted to discuss and flail over, because it's me.

2) Perhaps someone could clarify this one for me... )

So, internets, remember how I mentioned that Le Boyfriend and I have acquired a kitten (that my neighbors are currently petsitting)? And how I said I would post pictures? Welp, here they are!

'That's twice this month that you've slipped deadly nightshade into my tea and run off' 'Three times!'... )

So that's Le Boyfriend's and my new kitty, circa 10ish weeks old (if my neighbor's estimate of her age was correct). I know my RL posts on here can be kind of dull, but hopefully the adorable bb!kitty kind of makes up for it. In terms of fandom, work is slowly (but surely) continuing on my GK/AI crossover and [livejournal.com profile] mcl4r3n should be getting back from traveling soon so the vamp!fic will also (hopefully) be coming out of hiatus sometime this week. Stay tuned!

Soooo this is pretty much another "random odds and ends about life" post, but fear not! It includes fannish things!

1) Fact #1: Listening to one's iPod on shuffle while writing fic can often be quite helpful.

Fact #2: It can also, however, be somewhat problematic. Such as when one is in the middle of writing a really intense, emotional scene and Ice Cream Truck - Cazwell comes on (thus totally puncturing the mood). ("AngryangrysadangryfuckyeahBlackSabba-- big gay jam? Wat?")

2) I swear to God I just heard someone in the courtyard of my apartment complex yell "YEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HA!" at the top of their lungs. I'm not even joking.

3) [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g started a doctor!AU comment fic. Go read it. Now. I can wait.

4) Instead of studying for my test tomorrow like a good girl, I wound up spending a good chunk of today composing a fanmix for the GK/AI crossover. See what y'all think:

Still up for some potential changes, thus why I haven't set up appropriate linkage yet )

5) I also spent most of today finally finishing the first part of said GK/AI crossover. Yes, really. Behold!

Title: Everyone's Heart Doesn't Beat the Same (Part I)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies
Summary: A Generation Kill/American Idiot crossover AU in which Tunny's path still leads to military service, but gets there by a longer, much bumpier route.
Author's Note: A million thank-yous to [livejournal.com profile] jean_iris and [livejournal.com profile] pau494 for helping me with little details, brainstorming with me, listening to me whine, and generally waving pom-poms whenever necessary (bonus thank-yous to [livejournal.com profile] eiirene for helping me with how normal little kids speak). This part is dedicated to all of you.
Current Warnings: Bad language and possible triggers for domestic violence

I. Tales of Another Broken Home )

Comments of all kinds are, as usual, welcome and encouraged, but all I ask is for y'all to please remember my tiny, fragile ego when writing your comments. It's even more important in this instance because I worked so hard on this that it feels especially...personal. Idk, maybe I'm just being a giant wimp, just be gentle like usual, okay? Many, many revisions will probably ensue anyway as I compulsively nitpick this part for typos and stuff.

Aaand that's about it. Stay tuned for more vampire!AU (among other things).

Internets, y'know what's fun?

Medication side effects (more specifically, side effects that occur with higher doses of said medication). Especially when they wind up deep-sixing your Valentine's Day plans.

Blah blah long story blah )

Argh. The worst part of all this is that the increase has been doing a much better job of evening out my moods, so I'll probably just wind up toughing my way through the adjustment period instead of calling my shrink. Because I am a masochist that way.

Also, for the music wonks among us (especially anyone who's been in band/orchestra/etc.), who remembers this frightening little gem? )

Lastly, because I promised [livejournal.com profile] eiirene, have a Paweł picspam (which, with any luck, will spill over into the comments):

So, this here's basically another odd & ends post.

1) An entertaining video I found on [livejournal.com profile] stark_sands that doesn't really tell us anything new but DOES have tasty gratuitous shirtless closeups (AI stuff starts at approximately the 5 minute mark) )

Yes, I'm fully aware that I have no shame. At least the part about how the makeup team ages his tattoos with powder to make them look real is interesting?

2) I know I said I'd post my remaining SPN reaction posts today, but school and fic essentially took over my brain the entire afternoon, so I'm postponing it to tomorrow. Feel free to throw things at me, I know this is getting ridiculous -_-

3) Aaaaand more Batman!AU (which is now approximately 14,000 words ohGod /o\):

Title: Celer, Silens, Mortalis (Part 4)
Authors: [livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies and [livejournal.com profile] mcl4r3n
Summary: In which our heroes further develop their working relationship, all hell breaks loose, Walt gets into trouble, and Nate finds himself in a rather unique position.

Greetings and salutations once again, internets. Here, as promised, is the Happy Post I proposed before in an attempt to recharge everyone's emotional batteries (due to the sense of general ennui that I've been getting from my flist lately). 1) Six fics I've found and fallen in all kinds of fangirlish love with...
- Three Things Brad Stole From Ray That Ray Will Never Get Back by [livejournal.com profile] meeks00 - A sweet-but-hot Brad/Ray by the lovely and amazing [livejournal.com profile] meeks00. Seriously, the fact that I, a diehard Brad/Nate shipper, am rec'ing a Brad/Ray should speak to the quality of this sucker.

- Those Hands on that Body by [livejournal.com profile] shoshannagold - A bondage/kink-heavy Brad/Nate featuring toppy!Nate in a really excellent way. Especially good for those of us with very vivid, very visual imaginations.

- Bruised by [livejournal.com profile] grim_lupine - Another Brad/Ray, and another good one for those with vivid/visual imaginations. Brad marks Ray up in more ways than one and just...guh, nom nom nom, etc. Bonus points for well-done Ray voice.

- The unexpected tale of Combat Jack by [livejournal.com profile] noelia_g - An adorable Ray/Walt fic in which the boys get a puppy (that only listens to Walt but sort of loves Ray anyway). Pretty much the cutest thing ever (I couldn't stop grinning while I read it). Again, bonus points for a spot-on Ray voice.

- Unethical Behavior In The Workplace by [livejournal.com profile] dark_reaction - Possibly my new favorite Brad/Nate fic in the history of ever. It's an office!AU with hilariously vague, madcap science experiments and Nate has a kid and Brad scares his underlings for fun and just...read it. It's really long but it's seriously great.

- Appropriate Office Behavior by [livejournal.com profile] queeniegalore - Because I clearly have a kink for Brad/Nate in naughty office scenarios. Also features Ray/Jo (which I now totally 'ship because my fellow SPN fans know they'd make the best couple ever) and some deliciously subtle bossy!Nate that manages not to take away from Brad's awesomeness.

Goddamn, y'all, these fics are just...

2) Why Radcakes is one of my favorite actors (in 2 pages or less)

3) At last, a more coherent reaction post of Glee, 1x21, 'Funk' )

4) One of the best mash-ups I've ever seen (warning: will get stuck in your head) )

Now, if y'all will excuse me, I'm slowly-but-surely working on that to-do list I mentioned in my last post.

I have just seen a photo of Stark in leather pants.

It was a mind-breaking mix of hilarious, terrifying (leather manpris? really?), and stupidly hot (*mumbles something about a leather fetish*). I would post it here, but it came from TinyPic, which has equal parts fair game and too-fucking-creepy/personal photos on it by my system -- I'm not sure how to classify this one.

All things considered, I do believe my life is complete. I've seen everything, I can die now.

ETA: Some asking around has revealed that it comes from too personal a place for me to feel comfortable posting it. And yet somehow it wound up on TinyPic. I don't get people sometimes.

That being said, let's get on to the actual music, shall we? I shuffled through my music and picked out thirty songs that I felt represent a fairly comprehensive picture of my musical tastes (I just left out a few classical songs because those are a bitch to find on YouTube). (Side note: They're all under cuts because a few would autoplay otherwise).

So pick, choose, tell me if you picked up anything new that you like, rec me things based on this, ask me what I like about this or that song/artist, etc. Basically, this post is meant to be an explosion of musical awesome. Have at it!

29) Hello, I Love You - The Doors )

30) Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World )
