Internets, a rather unsettling realization occurred to me today:

I have absolutely no clue how to psychologically handle having free time.

I've done precisely fuck all today (and next to fuck all yesterday, and so on) and, for some deeply masochistic reason, I actually feel bad about this. There's that "at loose ends" feeling most people get when they finish uni, but there's also this lingering paranoia in the back of my mind that there's some deadline I'm missing or some bit of work I forgot to do.

It's official; sixteen straight years of rigorous formal education has fucked me up so badly that I cannot psychologically handle free time. This is my life.

In other news, I just wanted to sit down and squee about the latest episode of Hart of Dixie for a minute because OH MY GOD SO MANY #FEELINGZ (cut for spoilers) )

Also, as a side note, if Glee ruins Good Riddance (which they're supposed to cover soon), I will, as an Idiot fan, be forced to go on a killing spree of epic proportions. I listened to a preview and it sounded mostly unremarkable (which I'll take over actively bad), but still, TAKE NOTICE, TROLL MURPHY.

Holy shiny metallic mother of God I'm so tired

Le Boyfriend tells me we managed to have an entire conversation (that made zero sense) last night while I was basically half-conscious -- I don't remember any of this and am distinctly paranoid about what I might have said…

Anyway, I haven't updated recently because I've been kept so busy that I just didn't have the time or the energy. That being said, let's talk movies!

Things I've seen recently:

Chronicle (I was disappoint as a GK fangirl to see Patterson being the abusive asshole dad in this *sigh*)
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (So cracktastic and insane that I refuse to acknowledge it as a Ghost Rider movie)

Things I want to see:

Safe House (Denzelllll <3)
Act of Valor (LIKE BURNING)
The Hunger Games (AGAIN, LIKE BURNING)
The Dark Knight Rises
The Avengers (Because I want to mash Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth together like Barbie dolls)

Which reminds me! Have a humorous video about Marvel movies that my coworker showed me the other day )

Meanwhile, back on topic…

Things I kind of want to see:

This Means War (I'm willing to suffer through what Reese Witherspoon considers acting if it means I get Chris Pine and Tom Hardy pulling each other's pigtails snarking at each other in the same movie)
The Secret World of Arrietty
Wanderlust

It's gonna be a good year to go to the movies, y'all.

emerald_skies: (Default)
Oof, so...um...hi? I know it's kind of been a while, to put it mildly. Where to start...

1) My birthday was this past Sunday. Gifts include...

Season 1 of Sons of Anarchy
Season 2 of Sons of Anarchy
DVD of the cartoon/Disney Alice in Wonderland (for sentimental reasons)
A truly awesome birthday song left on my voicemail
A year's paid journal time from "Anonymous" (*cough*[livejournal.com profile] looleebelle*coughcough*)
Several birthday posts from y'all (including at least two that used the exact same Stark picture XD)
A $50 Bath & Body Works gift card (which I've already spent most of...)

But alas, no tattoo/nose piercing yet (I ran out of money for it buying Christmas presents, plus replacing yet another dead pair of headphones). Plus jury's still out on what Le Boyfriend got me, as he says he wants to give his present alongside his Christmas present. He did hint that both things were shiny though, so my inner magpie is pleased :P

2) I survived final exams (ranging from stupidly hard to suspiciously easy) and wound up with the following final/overall grades:

Strength & Conditioning - B (I was resigned to a C after how the first two tests went...)
Fitness Assessment & Programming - B (God bless the grade padding provided by my lab section)
Drugs & Behavior - A

And I'm all signed up for my classes next term:

Clinical Internship (yes, it counts for course credit)
Program Design & Administration
Therapeutic Modalities (translation: Rehab/Physical Therapy)
Obesity & Weight Management

So my university life continues to putter along, leaving me all set for my....last semester. Gulp.

3) Went to Le Boyfriend's graduation, and even managed to keep from teasing him about how he has to do real word/like-a-motherfucking-adult things now. At least they pronounced his name right and he seemed pretty happy.

4) Saw Immortals with Le Boyfriend at some point before I headed back to the Ol' Homestead for winter hols. I think my Facebook review, once again, sums it up pretty nicely:

"Saw "Immortals" tonight or, to sum it up, "Greek myth as retold by Frank Miller -- sex, blood, and oily, rippling abs as far as the eye could see". Not bad if you like brainless action flicks and aren't too attached to the original source material. 6.5/10 overall if you go in not taking it seriously."

It's sort of like cotton candy for your brain, only with glorious abs and suspiciously perfect teeth.

Aaaand that's about it for now. I hope the holidays aren't getting y'all too down -- remember, killing sprees are never worth the jail time, especially if it's your family. Peace!

THING THE FIRST: Some brief thoughts on the most recent ep of Glee )

THING THE SECOND: Stark is alive! And I still can't get over HIS HAAAAAIIIIIRRRR AND HIS STUPID ADORABLE FAAAAACE

I seriously did almost exactly this:
Photobucket

Yes, I know I need a life.

THING THE LAST: So, new developments have occurred in my quest for an internship, but I'm not really sure how to interpret them. The short and the short of it is I managed to get in touch with the head of the physical therapy department at another university nearby and, after consulting with one of his minions (to see if they could take on another student), he sent this back to me this morning: Ye olde email(e) )

That sounds promising, right? It wouldn't make sense to introduce me to the department if they weren't seriously considering taking me on (as opposed to being all vague and dicking me around like the other places have so far). OhGodIwantthisjooooooooooooob *twitch*

THAT IS ALL. How goes life out in internet-land?

THING THE FIRST: Dear university athletic training program director,

Remember how you said my biggest failing was that I needed to work on my people skills? Well I have some news for you; one client I saw at work today was the third person who told me they made a point of booking me specifically. Each of my "regulars" (in different words) said they liked me enough to book me again because I'm a) a good teacher, b) encouraging/nice/funny, and c) patient. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds to me like I have pretty good people skills.

Photobucket
Just sayin'.

--[livejournal.com profile] emerald_skies (who might still be a little bitter about being rejected twice...)

THING THE SECOND: Remember that test I mentioned having on Tuesday that I was convinced I flunked? Well....here are my grades for that class:

Exam 1 (with approx. one week of studying): 75
Exam 2 (with approx. one week of studying): 82
Exam 3 (the one I mislabeled on my calendar) (with one night of studying): ....91

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MY BRAIN WORKS OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT I AM CLEARLY SOME SORT OF GENIUS.

THING THE SECOND (PART TWO): Apparently my grade is the reason the professor didn't grade on a curve for this exam. I am THAT student, the curve-wrecking cyborg, for once in my life.

So yeah, between those two things (and other little insignificant victories), things actually sort of looked up today. Here's hoping it's the start of a trend, yeah?

Internets, do any of you ever have times in life where RL is kicking your ass so hard that you start to feel like you're losing your ability to fangirl(/boy)? Well, I've sorta been feeling that way lately, which culminated in last night; as I was studying for my test today, I found myself trying to remember if Stark's birthday (and thus my usual birthday post) had passed without me noticing ("I know it's in September, but when...")

Welp, funnily enough, it's today! Guess I haven't lost my fangirl mojo after all :D As such, have a brief celebratory pic/gif-spam (like I need an excuse, lol)

Oof, I'm fucking finally finished (crikey, try saying THAT three times fast) with this week. FINALLY. I think this gif sums up my #feelingz pretty nicely:

Photobucket

So, in "surprising developments" related news, I realized recently that, once my next paycheck clears in a week or two, I'll be able to ditch my current phone and get myself an iPhone! I'm pretty pumped, partly for the general gadget appeal but mostly because this means I will never, EVER be without internet access again.

Ugh, watch me get addicted to Angry Birds now, on top of everything else.

Also in the "surprising developments" department, I was poking around on my university's website recently and discovered that, provided I don't flunk any of my classes in this term or the next, I'll be graduating Cum Laude. Hell, if I make straight As again like I did last term, there's a microscopic chance I could swing Magna Cum Laude. Idk, it seems silly now that I talk about it, but it just surprised me because I started college thinking there was no way I could swing graduating with any sort of honors, so I just resolved not to even think about it. I guess this is proof that you shouldn't sell yourself short.

Anyway, I just have to survive two and a half more days of internetlessness and then I can set about to rejoining fandom (and hopefully getting rid of this little eyetwitch I've developed irl...) I'm pissed that I'm going to be missing yet another re-watch (*sigh*) more than anything else. Plus I want to try dipping my toe back into the Glee fandom by actually, y'know, making an effort to keep up with the watch-a-long posts.

And finally, on a totally unrelated note, I have a question for y'all. In the course of my tutoring work, I've been faced with a LARGE number of students who need help because English isn't their first language, and I find these cases especially challenging and headache-inducing. So my question is this; does anyone around here with experience in English as a second language (either teaching it or learning it) have any useful tips/advice to offer so I can help these students better? I'd really appreciate just about any insights at this point.

P.S. - Cosmic irony of the universe: one of my old friends from grade school has started using me as an unofficial shrink (again) right as I'm in the middle of dealing with some psychological shit of my own. It fucking figures, man.

P.P.S. - Dear meatheads/dudebros lifting free weights in the gym,

So y'all saw me walking by and decided to grunt/breathe/etc. much louder, apparently in some sort of attempt to look extra manly or something. Good on you. Here's the thing though -- I wasn't smiling because I was impressed, I was smiling because I was fighting down the urge to burst out laughing at how fucking ridiculous y'all sounded/looked.

Thanks for the much-needed laugh,

So, I hesitate to say this because I know it's probably going to jinx the fuck out of everything, but things appear to be -- dare I say it -- looking up.

Photobucket

Yeah, that was pretty much my reaction too. Amazing, right?

First of all, my first paycheck comes in a week! \o/ Le Boyfriend and I desperately need the money, so this is a big deal, plus it feels pretty good after all the shit I had to go through to be able to get said paycheck:

Step 1: Fill out 24 pages (not exaggerating) of some of the most confusing paperwork I've ever seen in my entire life. This may be the sleep deprivation talking, but I'm pretty sure I caught the phrase "forfeiture of immortal soul" at least once.
Step 2: Turn in said paperwork to the trolls in Human Resources, only to find out that my driver's license and my student I.D. are insufficient forms of identification.
Step 3: Frantic call to La Famille asking them to send a scan/photocopy of my birth certificate/passport/whatever so that HR can actually hand me my check (this should be taken care of by tomorrow).
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!!!

The best part of this job? If no one's booked me for a tutoring appointment, I've been directly told that all I have to do is chill out in the staff lounge (and what I do in there is, within reason, up to me). Internets, I'm essentially getting paid to fuck around on the internet and listen to music when I'm not actually tutoring anyone. Pause to appreciate the awesome.

Anyway, the second surprising positive development was that, after a chat about this last night, Le Boyfriend said this morning that he would handle the lion's share of packing up Le (Old) Flat. Unprompted. So I'm feeling considerably more positively disposed toward him now.

Also, my air conditioning is fixed! Le (New) Flat isn't a sweltering hotbox of death anymore!

Photobucket

And lastly, I will soon have my kitty (the wee speckly one, not the fluffy grey one)! University life has occasionally been really tough on me for lack of contact with animals, so this should help out with some of the stress considerably. Which, long story short, means my entries should be getting less whiny and more fannish again pretty soon.

In the spirit of my good (if somewhat tired) mood, have a silly gif of Esper dancing:

P.S. - The only downside to all this is that my internship next term is starting to look increasingly daunting. I wonder if I'll still get credit for the class if I commit noble suicide?
emerald_skies: (Default)
So Le Boyfriend and I signed up for AT&T U-verse cable and interwebs yesterday, but the sales guy said a tech won't be able to come out and install everything for another two weeks. TWO WEEKS.

Photobucket

Universe, I despair of you. How am I supposed to deal with all this moving bullshit without internets to help me unwind so I don't start firing shots from the nearest clock tower?

While we were signing all the paper work and shit, a bird flew into the window and we were pretty sure it was dead -- it seemed like a fitting illustration of what the last couple of days have felt like. On the bright side, the bird eventually got up, slowly shook itself off, and flew away, so maybe that means things will start looking up soon. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, the short and the short of this whole internet thing is that I'll only be able to read emails and read/write on Twitter during a large chunk of the day (since I'll only have phone internet) and then I'll have normal internet while I'm going to class. Basically, please don't take it personally if it takes me forever to answer email/comments; it's nothing personal, I'm just stuck with this arrangement for the next little while *sigh*

So I finished catching up on True Blood last night, and I have some things to say -- #feelingz, if you will.

Cut for spoilers or capslock or...gifs or something... )

I'll try to get caught up on Glee sometime this week so I can post a similar overall list of thoughts/feelings, for lack of actual detailed episode-by-episode reaction posts. Anyone who hasn't given up on the show yet is welcome to share thoughts of your own, I'd be most curious to hear them.

That being said, I just have a letter to mention and then I'm spent:

Dear jackass,

I don't know about you, but *I* thought watching you wipe out on your crappy BMX reject bike (after almost running me over with it on my way to class) was pretty fucking funny. Call me mean spirited or whatever, but it pretty much made my day. Thanks for the laughs!

I swear to Raptor Jesus, I'm getting so sick of bikers/skaters almost running my ass over on the way to class; I'm actively considering bringing a cane or some other sort of blunt instrument along with me to bludgeon/clothesline any more that decide I have less of a right to the sidewalk than they do.

In today's edition of "Why Twitter Continues To Be Utterly Tasteless", #AaliyahsAirplanePlaylist is trending (or, it was this morning, the trending list won't load now for some reason). Classy.

For those who live under a rock (which is fine, I normally do too), here's why I find this objectionable

In other news, even though it's only (ha!) 89ºF outside, I still showed up to my first class covered in sweat like I sprinted -- even though I walked at a fairly leisurely pace. Why, you ask? Because the heat index makes it feel like it's 95ºF and most of the trip was over concrete (which radiates heat like a bastard).

That's not the best part though; the high today is supposed to be 105. Remember that 6 degrees the heat index is supposed to add? I get to walk home feeling like it's 111ºF outside. Please excuse me while I die of heatstroke.

Finally, Le Boyfriend and I get to go argue with the people who own our next apartment complex because we noticed a mistake on our lease (which we signed yesterday) that might tack on an extra four months to our stay. ETA: We emailed the office types at the complex and they wrote us back saying we could come re-sign a corrected version of the lease any time today (in other words, no arguing appears to be necessary). Maybe Raptor Jesus took pity on my poor heat-stroke-stricken self.

The only bright side today is that I have just one class (Drugs & Behavior) to go to, and I managed to find the classroom okay even though it's in a building I've never had classes in before. Not an encouraging sign of what the rest of today is gonna be like. To summarize?

Oof, I've had just about enough of pretending to be a responsible adult for today. *flop*

Anyway, THINGS!

THING THE FIRST: I have a job interview on Monday! It's for an English/writing tutor position through the university and, considering all the time I considering reading/writing and how well I've been doing at English classes for years, I'm feeling pretty good about my odds. Not to jinx it or anything ohGod

THING THE SECOND: Le Boyfriend and I FINALLY watched Tangled last night and loved it. Amusingly, it seems to have put Le Boyfriend on a Disney kick -- we're watching Princess & The Frog as I write this very post (his idea, even!). Sign he's a keeper? I do believe so.

(Pause to appreciate the irony/role reversal action in how he chooses to watch Disney movies and I like war movies...shouldn't it be the other way around?)

THING THE LAST: The new apartment is mostly sorted out. I just have to go sign the lease in person and pay the pet deposit for my vicious trained attack kitten and then all that's left is to move in sometime in the middle of September. LOOK AT ME BEING ALL RESPONSIBLE AND SHIT.

That's all I've got for now. How are y'all?

Ugh, I don't know if my brain chemistry is out of whack again or if my muse is just fucking off again or if staying up to chat all night with [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle is finally starting to break my brain or what, but I can't seem to be bothered to write anything. I want to write, I really do, but I opened up the Google Docs for EVERYTHING I have going. Nothing. Zip. Zero.

Anyway, I've already been having an odd sort of day as it is, starting by watching this video and paying closer attention to what he's saying this time (shutupIcanfeelyourjudgment):

Yes, it's Michael Esper again )

That part where he mentions dropping out of highschool sophomore year due to issues with depression? I was in my sophomore year when I dropped out of high school the first time, due to a nervous breakdown caused by a massive bipolar-related depressive episode.

In other words? Mind. Officially. Blown. Maybe there are/were more reasons than I originally guessed that I felt like I understood Will a lot when I saw the show. I feel sort of ridiculous for being so boggled by this, I'm just...struck by the freaky coincidence, I guess.

Finally, have a meme I gacked from [livejournal.com profile] lemniciate:

The Hypothetical AU Meme: Take any one of the fandoms you know I write in (or think I should), and give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, Ancient Rome, etc). I will then explain what story from your chosen fandom I would write for your chosen type of AU.

I AM NOT READY FOR THIS SHIT.
emerald_skies: (Default)
Dude, I was ordering more of my meds today and I actually bothered to look at what my meds SHOULD cost -- let me tell you, internets, being crazy is fucking expensive. Thank Raptor Jesus for La Famille's health insurance or else I would be...like...negative broke. Seriously. I would have the opposite of money.

In other news, the air conditioner died yesterday evening (as [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle already knows because I spent most of last night whining to her about it). I wound up sleeping on top of my sheets in just a bra and shorts with my ceiling fan cranked up to full blast and I still felt godawful. I haven't sweated that much since I had the crazy death flu in my first year of college (and in that case it was because I had a fever of 105ºF). Just one of life's little reminders not to take things for granted, I suppose -- I actually have heard news reports about people without air conditioners here DYING (literally!) in the hotter parts of the summer. Thankfully, the repair guy showed up while I was gone this morning instead of three days later (or some such like what cable repair technicians pull on people).

Finally, I took my chemistry final (ha! See what I did there?) a couple of hours ago and actually...sort of did okay on it. I think. I was studying yesterday (and, again, whining to [livejournal.com profile] looleebelle) and was just about ready to commit seppuku by the time I went to sleep but actually? It wasn't that bad.

Of course, it's entirely conceivable that I still flunked it but fuck it, all my other grades in the class are As, it would be literally impossible for me to actually fail this class at this point so Idgaf. Freedom!

Soooo yeah, Le Boyfriend and I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 together at midnight last night (er...this morning). It was pretty intense, honestly, and there was the usual requisite couple of people who showed up in interesting costumes, including a guy in the row in front of us who was in PERFECT Voldemort costume (right down to a bald cap glued against his skin) and a girl waiting to claim her tickets in a full-body Snitch outfit (gold unitard, wings, the works).

ANYWAY, I promised a reaction post, so here we go *cracks knuckles* )

This is a fairly skeletal reaction post, I'll probably add more things as they occur to me so feel free to check back from time to time or, if anyone feels so inclined, share your own noteworthy moments!

Finally, for anyone that's still reading this post by this point, here's the next part of the thirty day writing meme:

Day Twenty-Two: Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

Um...nope. I'd like to, for sure, but I never seem to have a substantial plot bunny at the time that these things go down. Then there's also the fact that I'm horribly insecure about my shorter works (if you can call them that) even at the best of times, and also the lingering paranoia that my muse would crap out on me THE MOMENT I finished signing up for the fucking thing. Like I said in some post before; my neuroses, they are many.

Somebody hold me...

I probably won't put up a review/reaction post until after Chemistry lab tomorrow but, on the bright side, I'll probably be so zombified that the post itself will be all kinds of capslocky and hilarious. Mmmm, tasty silver lining.

That being said, meme!

Day Twenty-One: Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

I have yet to actually write a sequel for any fics I've worked on (either alone or in a collaborative capacity), not because I don't like them but just because I haven't really had any substantial ideas for such things. I've had people ask for a sequel to the Batfic, for example, and the only thing that's stopped me from running the idea by [livejournal.com profile] mcl4r3n is the fact that I have absolutely no idea what we would put in it. Plus I'm not sure we could ever possibly top Le Batfic, but that's more rampant insecurity than anything else.
